So, I made the big move! As John Denver once sang "I'm leaving on a jet plane", but for me I guess it was more like I'm leaving on a rented SUV. It's the truth but it's sadly not as catchy. It took about 16 hours to get here. I grew up in the general Palm Springs area so Humboldt, while being a totally new environment, is one hell of a drive. We ended up renting a fancy GMC 9 seater so I was feeling pretty pampered the ride up. Especially since I was able to jam out to my own music and have practically the entire back seat to myself. I spent a majority of the ride up enjoying the nature and watching a total change of ecosystems. Southern California and Northern California are seriously two completely different environments. I'm so out of my element but at the same time I'm loving it. I'm adapting to my new life! I moved in on August 14th and the process was not as stressful as what I thought it would be. Actually this entire experience I've had such low expectations but countless times I have been blow away with how amazing this entire experience has been. I must say, I really fucking love it here. My roommate, Belle, is the sweetest. We work well together. I need to live with someone who is motivated about life and getting an education and she was the answer to my prayers. We have done so many productive things in the past two days it's amazing. I have a strong feeling that living together will be a breeze. By the way, our room looks awesome. I honestly think that we deserve a best looking room award because it is seriously such a vibe in here! Did I mention that Humboldt is absolutely beautiful?
I'm constantly in awe walking around on campus, I've never seen so many trees in my entire life! I just love the nature and the people here so much. I'm surprised at the amount of friends I've made so far. I came here seriously thinking that I wasn't going to talk to anyone but people have just seemed to naturally come into my life and all of them have been so down to earth and kind. For instance today myself and a group of other girls (serious strong feminine energy!) went into the forest and kinda just ended up stumbling across some other cool likeminded people and had a mini forest party. I've also met a lot of Gemini's and dead heads which has me totally stoked. Moral of this story I really couldn't be any happier then am I here.

Summer is coming to a close for me soon due to the fact that I will be packing up my car and heading off to college in no more then 5 days! It's crazy to think that I will soon be embarking on my new life as a young adult. It's going to be a whole new world for me and I'm incredibly ecstatic to start my new journey. Although, before I leave I must reflect and since I'm going to art school I thought it would be best to reflect on my various pieces that I had created over this summer. Consider this my mini summer portfolio! #1: This first piece was done with mixed media on canvas. I wanted to create something that would not only represent the moon and sun but also our world and the people, things and places that inhabit it and thus this was born! I gathered together some images found in National Geographic magazines and assembled them in a somewhat abstract manner but still with the allowance of a recognizable form, that being of the moon and sun, to show forth. #2 & 3: The second and third pieces were jeans that I painted with acrylic paint and textile medium. The first ones I did for myself and the second pair I made to sell online (which are still up for sale on my depop shop, check it out! @ depop.com/customthreads). I was thinking I might be able to start a mini business out of making custom clothing for people. They would give me a design or an idea and I would take from that and create an article of clothing inspired by that. These first two designs I can't claim rights to but as this little business of mine started to grow I began to create my own work that is loosely based off of the design I was given as you will see later in this post. #4: This third piece was for my friend Juan, (shoutout to Juan!!). This is another mixed media on canvas and he asked me to create a piece that was based off of Tyler, The Creators new album Flower Boy so, as you might be able to tell, I was already stoked to make this piece. I got a lot inspiration from the albums colors which were lots of yellows, oranges and greens and since the albums name is "Flower Boy" I decided to form an assortment of photos of Tyler, The Creator into a literal flower. Honestly I didn't think this piece was going to turn out how I wanted it to but in the end I couldn't be any happier with it's outcome. #5: This was another custom clothing job for this sweetheart of a girl named Penny that I met at a scholarship meeting in the valley. The images painted on were done with acrylic paint and textile medium. She gave me the jacket and sent me some images to use as inspiration and this is what I came up with! I painted her name on the front pocket, did a series of female faces on the back and added some white paintbrush marks all over the jacket to revamp it's style... I think it turned out super cute! #6: This final piece I did for my friend Vanessa. At the time of me publishing this post it would have probably been before I gave this to her so if you're reading this Vanessa, SURPRISE! She asked me to do something small for her as a remembrance of our friendship. I was going to do something with a super deep meaning behind it but then I realized that Vanessa didn't have any pictures the LOVE OF HER LIFE Steve Lacey on her wall so I changed the direction of my vision and made this cute lil thing. This was once again done with mixed media on canvas.
Hopefully you liked your piece Vanessa! I hope to continue these posts of my own art work. Maybe my next one with be "Art that I've done this fall..."? I want to be able to document my jounrey as I grow as an artist throughout my life and I think my blog would be the perfect platform for that. So, thank to those that are watching and supporting my journey! |
